Marcell Ateman decided it was time to make a decision, so he called Oklahoma State head coach Mike…
One-on-One with Marcell Ateman
Ateman is also well spoken and represents himself, his family, and his school well. We had a chance to speak with him on Triple Play Sports Radio's Sportstalk with Robert Allen and Friends. Question: You were kind of fired up last night when the commitment came down. Ateman: Oh, yes sir. Question: Take us through the recruiting process for you? Why you made the decision when you made it? Why you chose Oklahoma State? Ateman: Well, you know they offered me when I went down there for their Junior Day (in February), so that is when I noticed that Coach (Kasey) Dunn, Coach (Mike) Gundy, and Coach (Todd) Monken had interest in me. During that time period until now it was one of those things that I fell in love with. Their coaching staff, they are a successful football team. I really didn't think I would make my decision early, but I just felt like it was the best thing for me. I knew that is what I really wanted and last night I talked to Coach Gundy and Coach Monken and I pulled the trigger and shot the deal. I told them I was going to become a Cowboy. Question: Was more this was the right move rather than you wanted to get it over with? You'll never have another time in your life where this many adults are chasing you around. Ateman: I just felt it was the right time for me. Question: I've watched a lot of tape on you, so let's talk about you as a football player. Here's a note I wrote down, "can get wide open." I do not know how a receiver your size finds ways to get open like you do when I know you are on the other team's scouting report? Ateman: I just watch a lot of tape, and you know a lot of coverages. My coach makes a big deal about knowing coverages and what DBs and what corners do. I spend a lot of time watching coverages and when I see something happen I just react and get myself open. That is what my coach always tells me to do, get open. Question You are very good in the short passing game, and a lot of times receivers your size aren't as good at that. You can really operate well in screens and nows and Wylie East does a lot of that. Ateman: I mean I know that you see a lot of guys in the NFL and college can get up field in the short game and a lot of coaches stress that, yards after catch. That is what I try to tell myself when I catch the ball, don't look because you will go out of bounds. Instead make the guy miss and I try to make him whiff and then get up field. Question: Two words I wrote down that are important, "team concept." That means you runs routes hard all the time and that you go downfield and make blocks. Ateman: Yes sir, it is not always about me and what is best for me. It is about my team, and that means if I have to go downfield and make a block for my running back, then that is what I am going to do. It's about the team having success and going to the playoffs. Question: Do you know what you want to study at Oklahoma State? Ateman: As of now, I want to go into some type of business (major). I haven't decided which area yet, but I know I want to major in business. Once I look at it a little more then I know I will figure it out. Question: Are you running track? Anything going on right now? Ateman: We have only one guy that has moved on in track, so I'm just working on football right now. I did run track this year. Question: Congratulations on your commitment, and your coaches and family are to be congratulated, Ateman: Thank you, and I appreciate it.
