Anzalone Nears Announcement
For a while Alex Anzalone seemed to be having fun with the recruiting process, but that was before his commitment to Ohio State leaked prematurely. Since then, the four-star outside linebacker from Wyomissing (Pa.) Area High has remained relatively quiet, even through his de-commitment from the Buckeyes, the trimming of his list to Florida, Penn State and Notre Dame, and even leading up to his announcement this weekend. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Anzalone will make his decision public either Saturday or Sunday at Nike's The Opening in Beaverton, Ore., but any hopes of committed players swaying him is basically fruitless. Anzalone made his decision last weekend, but has waited for this event to announce it. His three finalists remain Florida, Penn State and Notre Dame, but even his coach noticed a change in Anzalonee's approach after the Ohio State commitment was leaked via another recruit on twitter. "Things changed a little bit at that point," Wyomissing coach Bob Wolfrun said. "He was taking everything in stride. He seemed to be not pressured too much, at least up until that point." Since de-committing from Ohio State, Anzalone has taken trips to his three remaining schools. In fact, he has been to each of them multiple times. "I really didn't talk to him too much about what he was going to do," Wolfrum said. "I tried to keep my opinions to myself. I do know he visited a lot of places, and some of them more than once. I guess he really wanted to get it right." Whichever school gets Anzalone, they will be getting a transformed player. "He was a very good player as a sophomore, but he was 165 pounds," Wolfrum said. "He went on a nutrition program between his sophomore and junior year, and he worked with a trainer really hard. He came back 30 pounds heavier. He was 205 when he started his junior year. "He was always a good player, but putting on the size and adding speed, he just raised the thing to a whole different level. He's one of those guys that he just has an instinct for football. He understands where he needs to be, on top of having the frame he has, it just makes him a top notch player."
