With double digit returning starters, a dynamic signal caller and a trio of dangerous wide receiver…
Cardinals counting on a stable of backs
Led by juniors Dominique Brown and Jeremy Wright, Carter said during the Cardinal Caravan in Frankfort that he believes this is the strongest backfield that he's had during his coaching career. Brown rushed for 533 yards and four touchdowns last season after being switched from quarterback, while Wright ran for 334 yards and one TD. "I think this is as talented as any backfield I've had, and I've had some really good ones," Carter said. "They have a little bit of everything, but the best thing about them is that they're all interchangeable. "(Offensive coordinator) Shawn (Watson) doesn't have to alter his play-calls depending on who's in the game because they can all pass-protect, they all run well after contact, they all catch the ball well. "So when you have that in everybody it makes them all a lot better." Junior Senorise Perry and redshirt freshman Corvin Lamb will also be battling for time and give the Cardinals four capable backs. Perry ran 12 times for 40 yards and one TD last season. Carter said he likes what each guy can bring to the table for the team and said the coaching staff plans on "playing them all." Brown is listed at 6-foot-2, 230 pounds, while Wright is 5-11, 205, Perry is 6-foot, 205 and Lamb checks in at 5-9, 205 with Carter noting "they're all extremely strong." Carter said all of the backs in his current stable have the capability of being the "home run" guy when it comes time to play games. "I really do," he said. "They all know the little things they need to work on that I feel like are weaknesses of theirs and that's what really all we focus on. The strengths each of them have, they all kind of know that because always lean towards that. They all can be home-run hitters." And all four can also do something else – or they better be able to – block. The coaching staff has stressed versatility and pass blocking with each of the running backs on the roster. "If you can't block, you can't pas protect, you cant play," Carter said. "Period. Some people will give a back the opportunity to just be a runner or just be a pass-catcher. But we don't separate them in our scheme. "If you can't do it all, then you won't play."
