A season update on the 18 commitments in the 2014 class- what they've done and where they're headed.
Mahomes still solid with Texas Tech
"Definitely [still solid with Tech]," Mahomes said. "I wanted to go to the TCU game but I couldn't make it because of my football game. I'm either going this weekend, but more then likely I'll be at the Iowa State game."
That should come as good news to Red Raider fans because the birthday boy has been tearing it up this season.
Mahomes is among the state leaders in nearly every passing category (1,235 yards, 12 touchdowns, no interceptions) and his team is 3-0 and shooting up the state rankings (No. 5 in AP Class 4A poll).
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound dual-threat likens Texas Tech's young coaching staff to his current one at Whitehouse under first-year head coach Adam Cook.
"The coaching staff is probably the main reason I did commit there," Mahomes said. "I love the coaching staff they have there and the energy, kind of like we have at Whitehouse. They love Tech and that's one of the main reasons I committed"
Mahomes deflected praise towards his teammates when asked about his early season success, adding he and his teammates welcome the pressure which comes along with a high state ranking.
He also said he doesn't have a big birthday celebration planned, just dinner with family and teammates, and then it's right back to preparing for this week's opponent-Marshall.
"Patrick is just one of those special players and we're just really blessed to have him on the team," Cook said. "It's been really neat to watch him grow, but with that being said, we were watching film yesterday and there are still areas where he sees he can get better."
Mahommes is also a standout on the hardwood and baseball diamond. In fact, the third-team 2012 THSBCA All-State selection and first-team All-East Texas performer at shortstop (.380, 30 RBIs, 12 doubles, 2 triples, 28 steals, 48 runs) plans on playing both football and baseball at Texas Tech.
"The day I committed I talked to some of the baseball coaches too," Mahomes said. "I had already talked with them before and Kingsbury and the baseball coaches had already talked to each other and said it would work out. That's another big part of why I committed."
