Impressive Ivey

Martez Ivey

Who's the top recruit from Florida in '15? I debate that in Part 3 of 10 thoughts from the state title games.

TEN thoughts from the state championships - Part 3

Apopka, Fla. offensive tackle Martez Ivey is the top prospect in the Class of 2015 from the state of Florida. At least I would have him slotted No. 1 right now, especially after seeing him perform in their state championship loss to South Dade on Saturday night. This kid's upside is ridiculously high. I mean he's off the charts.

Ivey is 6-foot-6, 275-pounds. I have covered recruiting since 1992 and I can't recall seeing a prospect with his length. I mean his arms literally go almost to his knees. Even at his size now Ivey looks like he could easily carry an additional 50-pounds. He moves incredibly well. You should see him pull and block on the run. He's just light on his feet and very athletic.

The Blue Darters ran a single-wing T this season. From a standpoint of run blocking you can see Ivey do it all. They would flip flop him, sometimes he would play on the right side, sometimes on left. Ivey has supreme athletic ability for his size. He shows flexibility and the ability to move and bend. Even at his size he plays with good leverage, whether he's coming off the ball at the line of scrimmage and going after a moving target when pulling. Ivey can get to the second level. If he doesn't put a defender on the ground he will sustain his block and drive the opposition backwards.

In pass pro he has some great physical advantages. Ivey can keep defenders at bay because of his sheer size and arm length. He can slide side to side and possesses very good footwork and balance.

Once he rounds out his game, plays with better technical fundamentals and really bulks up and fills out his enormous frame, there's no telling what kind of beast he can one day become as an offensive tackle. This kid is a coach's dream for this position.

This fall I have had the opportunity to see many of the elite recruits in the 2015 class. Some I have actually seen play twice like defensive end Byron Cowart (Seffner Armwood) , cornerback Kevin Toliver (Jacksonville Trinity Christian), linebacker Jeffrey Holland (Jacksonville Trinity Christian), and wide receiver George Campbell (Tarpon Springs East Lake). These guys, at least in my mind, are all five-star types. The one top tiered junior I have not seen is defensive end CeCe Jefferson (Glen St. Mary Jefferson County).

From this group I believe the battle for No. 1 overall is between Ivey and Toliver. Toliver's physical attributes are parallel to Ivey's in respect to the positions they play. Toliver is an elite corner with size. He's 6-foot-2, 180-pounds and finding those types of corners is rare. And after watching Toliver play on two different occasions over the last three weekends nothing has changed in my mind in regards to him as a prospect and the huge ceiling he has in the future. Toliver is committed to LSU.

But at this time I just feel like Ivey has a little more, especially considering down the line you are looking at a potentially 325-300-pound offensive tackle that could turn into a flat-out monster at that position.

Ivey currently holds scholarship offers from Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, Nebraska, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma and many more. When it's all said and done I would anticipate that he will be able to name his school.

As we close the chapter on the 2013 season in the Sunshine State, Ivey is my top prospect in the state of Florida going into the spring recruiting campaign.
