Pirtle a major pickup for Western Kentucky

6-foot-1, 205-pound athlete joined Glasgow's Marquez Trigg in committing to WKU on Wednesday.

You could say Wednesday was a big day for the Western Kentucky football program.

The Toppers picked up a verbal commitment from Glasgow running back Marquez Trigg (story), followed shortly after by DeSales defensive end Bryant Pirtle.

"Coach (Greg) Nord told me to call him," Pirtle said. "And I just felt like committing.

"I had been thinking about it for a couple of weeks. As soon as I called him (Nord), I told him I wanted to commit.

"He said I made his day. Then he wanted me to call Coach Brohm so he would know too, Brohm was excited."

Coincidentally, the two played each other in the 2013 KHSAA AA state playoffs.

After Pirtle's team hadn't allowed 100 yards rushing to a running back all year, Trigg ran for 221 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries in the postseason matchup.

But the DeSales star got the trump card, finishing with 5 tackles and a sack--and the 35-28 victory.

At WKU's June 7 prospect camp, Pirtle weighed in at 6-foot-1 and 1/2 inches, 205 pounds, and ran a 4.53 40-yard dash.

Given those quality measurements, he projects as an outside linebacker at WKU, and could develop into a pass-rushing specialist for the Tops.

"I just liked the school so much," he said. "I think it's a rising program.

"It's close to home, I like all the coaches. I was ready."

In his junior season, Pirtle totaled 22.5 sacks and 66 tackles, also adding 166 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries.
