PREVIEW 2014: CATHEDRAL IRISH
PREVIEW 2014: CATHEDRAL IRISH Most teams who enter the tournament with a 4-5 record would expect a short lived tourney run. That is far from the expectations at Cathedral. The Irish face one of the most daunting schedules in America. Once the tourney started the Irish rolled winning their fourth straight state title. The Irish will have some major holes to fill if they are to garner a fifth straight title. Indiana's Mr Football Terry McLaurin is now at Ohio State, QB Collin Barthel is now playing basketball at the University of Chicago, TE Zach Saum is at Army, OL Aidan O'Neill is at D2 Walsh in Ohio. STANDOUT Massive offensive lineman Jared Thomas comes back for his third year as a OL starter. He recently picked Northwestern over Boston College. He also is power forward on the Irish Basketball Team BREAKOUT PLAYER Junior DL Kendall Coleman is one you will start hearing on D1 radars this season. He started last season TOP UNDERCLASSMEN Coleman will be one to watch here as is junior RB Evan Christopher. Last season he rushed for 597 yards. SCOUTING THE: IRISH POSITION BY POSITION QUARTERBACK> The Irish have been blessed with some outstanding QB's the last few seasons. Getting the drivers role in offense will be 6-2 junior Max Bortenschlager. He will be the key in the Irish offense. RUNNING BACK Senior Caleb Cross teams with the earlier mentioned Christopher to form a lethal backfield duo. Cross rushed for 1273 yards last season. Senior Venton Curry will also get some carries. RECEIVERS Replacing McLaurin is no easy chore. Senior Evan Whigham caught 45 passes for 695 yards last season. Look for track standout Malcolm Dotson and junior Dan Dolan to also step up. OFFENSIVE LINE The good news is Jared Thomas is back, bad news is Aidan O'Neill, Mitch Rougraff and James Officer are off the college. Junior Jim McGuigan, senior Dwight Hall and junior Jack Wagner need to step up. DEFENSIVE LINE The Irish return DE's Kendall Coleman and Michael Mitsch. Look for Shelton Buell and Thomas Berg to compete for DL time LINEBACKERS IU preferred walk on Kyle Loechel graduates from the Irish 3-5-3 scheme. Sophomore Ben Stewart started late in the season. Looking to join Stewart are David Dickman, Grant Thompson and Eliot Frederick. DEFENSIVE BACKS The leading returning tackler is junior FS Kyle Hoeper. CB Connor Mullin lends support. KICKING GAME Junior Mitch Gerbers is back as the place kicker and Joseph Schopper returns as punter. OUTLOOK: The Irish have enough talent to make it five in a row. They again face a tremendous regular season schedule that is among the toughest in the nation. No need to pay attention to wins and losses until tourney time. Key will be the development of the QB.
