The Opening: DL Breakdown

Many big bodies on the defensive side of the ball lined up Tuesday to get after it in the trenches and it was a strong start for the defensive linemen…

Five-star Byron Cowart always asks for help, for direction, and for ways he can get better.

It showed during the Nike Football Training Camp on Tuesday. The five-star defensive lineman out of Seffner (Fla.) Armwood was clearly the best at his position.

He started off with wins over five-star Mitch Hyatt (Clemson commit), then he defeated Martez Ivey, the No. 1 prospect in the country in back-to-back reps.

He showed a great burst off the ball and with active hands, he was dominant.

Other than Cowart, there were plenty of others who shined on Tuesday as the group went through drills and then finished with some one-on-one battles.

After Cowart, Kahlil McKenzie showed why he is in the discussion for the top overall prospect on Scout. He has great lower body strength, he moved well in the drills, and won seven out of eight reps.

Staying on the inside, Jonathan Ledbetter, Rashan Gary, Daron Payne, and Breidon Fehoko also had strong starts to The Opening.

Five-star Payne was in better condition this event than he was at the NFTC in Birmingham, Ala. and he was disruptive in the one-on-ones. He showed better movement in the agility drills too. Ledbetter and Fehoko also had success against offensive linemen with Fehoko showing more power and Ledbetter quickness.

Gary is a 2016 prospects, one of the very few selected for this event and he has a bright future. He is already a five-star on Scout.

On the outside, Cowart was the guy, but Natrez Patrick is another who had some success. It was all about the speed and quickness off the ball for the Georgia commit. He has a good first step and he showed a good dip and burst around the corner.
