Hoover Morning News And Notes

Hoover, Ala. -- Heading into tonight's double-elimination playoffs, two teams certainly appear to be the cream of the crop in the Southeastern Select 7on7 as Byrnes and Shiloh Christian are the lone undefeated teams.

Shiloh will enter the playoff brackets as the number one overall seed thanks to holding four of seven schools to ten points or less over the two days of pool play and leading the scoring with 233 points. Byrnes, which is second to Shiloh in points scored at 217 points, caught two scares in today's action as as Memphis University, which finished 1-5-1 in pool play, nearly pulled off the upset losing 24-18. The Byrnes Rebels also took part in what was the best game of the day in a 31-22 victory against McGill-Toolen. It took a late touchdown with under a minute to play on third down for Byrnes to pull away for the victory.

McGill-Toolen, which still appears to be one of the toughest and most athletic teams in the tournament, caught a tough break today playing Shiloh Christian to a 27-9 loss in its first game and following that up with the game against Byrnes. However, with its physical brand of man-to-man football, the playoffs could be feast or famine from the Alabama school.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day goes to the Hoover "B" team, which was one of four undefeated teams on the day, joining the aforementioned undefeated schools and Nease out of Florida. Though they played teams with a combined record of 5-15-1, the young "B" team looks more confident as the tournament draws on.

Spice Rack
Julio Jones is still a dominant force for Foley, and the 6-foot-3, 205 pound junior is keeping his team in games and even winning a few games by himself. It is worth buying a ticket just to see the clinic he is putting on with brilliant arial catches and smooth cuts finding holes in the zone coverage. Senior quarterback Roosevelt Byrd is so confident in Jones that he is more than willing to throw the ball into triple coverage knowing that Jones will bring the ball down, which he does on an amazingly consistent body. If more of his teammates can get involved in the games, which happened for Foley after an early loss to Spain Park, they will go deep in the playoffs.

Two more big-name players are not involved in the tournament. Xavier Dye, a Clemson commit from Byrnes, did not make the trip down after the South Carolina High School League denied his request to transfer to Byrnes from Greenwood. Sources on the Byrnes squad indicate they still feel Dye will join them for the first game.

The big name for Springdale is tight end Zack Pianalto, a four star player headed to Texas. However, he is out for the rest of the tournament after breaking his collarbone yesterday. He is expected to miss at least eight weeks of practice and action after the injury.
