Speed Work Paying Off for Engel

Chaska (MN) wide receiver Derrick Engel is one of the top prospects in the Gopher state this year. He lead his team in receiving last season and has good measureables, but still has come out of the summer without any scholarship offers. As a result, he has been working overtime to make sure his senior campaign is his best yet.

Imagine leading your team in receiving and being on the verge of some major college scholarships as a wide receiver and your high school switches to the triple option. That is the situation facing Chaska (MN) wideout Derrick Engel, but he still sees plenty of opportunity.

"Last year we ran a spread because we had a great quarterback," he explained, "now we're switching to the Navy offense, it's triple option, run first, but they want to get the ball in my hands on offense. I'll be getting some carries as an option back and I'll be punt and kick returner and safety on defense."

Last season, Engel had 30 receptions for over 500 yards and three touchdowns. At 6'2, 170-lbs, he has the frame to grow into a good sized college wideout and this summer, while training at Game Speed in Eden Prarie, MN, he has chopped his 40 time down to a blazing 4.34.

That type of explosiveness, coupled with a couple of nice camp performances have gotten him on the college radar, although the big "O" word has not made its way to the surface just yet.

"I haven't gotten any offers yet, but I'm being recruited by Northwestern, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa State, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Washington State, Iowa, Western Michigan, North Dakota State and North Dakota. Those are probably my top schools. I went to most of those camps in the summer, they all like me a lot but they said they'll look at my first game or my first two games."

Engel says the Huskies of Northern Illinois told him he was in the top five on their receivers board and some of the other schools on his list have shown similarly strong interest. Knowing this, he has been working at a dizzying pace to ready himself for the upcoming season.

"I work at Game Speed every day during summer, I've been working hard at the high school and I think I'm ready to go."
