Demetre Baker back from Gainesville
"It went great I had a lot of fun," Demetre Baker said. "We did some one-on-one and 7-on-7 and I was real competitive all day long. I talked to all the staff and they were all impressed, especially Coach Strong. Coach Meyer said that I looked great and he wants me to be a Gator. They want me to come to Friday Night Lights and go against the best players in the country. We didn't know much about each other but now we spent some time together and he is a straight forward kind of person. Florida is the place and they win championships. "I told him that I was very impressed and I told him that when I was up in his office. When I walked in I was very impressed he and seems like a great person who is all about the players and hard work. We talked about getting into the school and grades and he said they don't throw offers around to just anyone. He felt like me coming into his office was a big deal and he doesn't let just anyone in his office." Even though Baker walked out without the Florida offer that he was expecting, he did learn what he needed to learn about the National Champs. "I saw what I needed to see as far as team stuff goes and the only other thing I want to do is walk around the campus a little bit. Without the offer I am not sure if I can get back up there for Friday Night Lights. I have a busy schedule and a ton of trips and stuff like that and I emphasized that but he said he wants me to come back and said that it's a big deal. That is another evaluation period and they got a chance to evaluate me today one-on-one for a long time. I am supposed to go to East Carolina on July 25 so I am not sure yet. I felt great about them because I got to see just about everything that I wanted to see so it was a great trip. It is a big turnaround for me with regards to looking at Florida at this point." Baker talked about what's next for him and the Gators. "Coach Loeffler told me to call him and stay in touch with him but he wants me to call him and see what happens. I will stay in touch with him and hope that I get an offer. They are great people and I want to get to know them better. The competition was great and that what it's all about and I loved doing it." Baker is coming off an impressive junior season with 80 tackles, 18 for a loss, four sacks, six forced fumbles and 700 yards rushing. He is also the two-time state champ in the shot put and the two-time runner up in the discus.
