A stiff wind marked the duration of the 1A and 2A state title games in Champaign, Illinois on Friday…
2011: Wienke Back in Action
Tonight, Jud Wienke will make his season debut for Tuscola (Ill.) High. The junior quarterback broke his collarbone and has not played until now. He has experience though, having started eight games as a sophomore last season for Waterloo West in Iowa. The Wienke family moved to Iowa to be closer to Jud's older brother John, now a redshirt freshman quarterback at the University of Iowa, but have returned to Tuscola where John won two state championships with father Stan as the head coach. "We've always been quarterbacks ever since we played JSL," Jud said, "it was something he (their father) brought us up at and we've always been good at baseball and pitching and he's really knowledgeable with quarterbacks, so we've always been quarterbacks." John was a heavily recruited prospect who had offers from the likes of Michigan, Kentucky and others before settling on Iowa. Jud's recruitment is beginning as well and he is hearing from his share of programs. I've gotten a lot of letters froma lot of different schools, but the ones that are showing the most interest are Wisconsin and Arizona. I've also gotten letters from Notre Dame, some from Illinois, Iowa, but Arizona and Wisconsin are the most interested." Jud says he and his brother are both busy with football and school, but they still talk a couple times a week. When they do, the conversation usually centers around football and his older brother has offered him some counsel on the recruiting process. He will get to see his brother play live on Saturday as he will be an unofficial visitor in Madison for the Wisconsin-Iowa game. It will be his second trip to see the Badgers. "I went to Wisconsin the first week when they played Northern Illinois and watched the game. I liked it a lot actually. I thought the campus was really, really nice. Obviously, the fans and atmosphere are pretty nice there and the team is doing pretty well. The coaches were really nice. They just said to keep on working on football and they'll keep contacting me." As for the Hawkeyes themselves, Wienke said, "I went to a camp this summer and last summer and other than that, I just know them feom being up there. We haven't really talked about recruiting. They talk to me beacuse of John, but really nothing major." The injury has set Jud back some, but with his team at 4-3, he has a chance to lead them into the playoffs and give college recruiters more film to look at. In terms of style of play, he says the brothers are like peas in a pod. "A lot of people who compare me and John say we're almost identical as far as quarterbacking goes. I really don't notice anything much that's different between me and John. He might be a little bit faster than me, but that is about it."
