"He's very disciplined and focused."
Johnavon Fulton Scout.com Rating: Four-Star Scout.com Rank: No. 6 Cornerback Size: 6-foot, 180-pounds Hometown: Manning High School Manning, S.C. Projected Position: Cornerback Stats: Fulton made 48 tackles, eight interceptions, and had 16 pass breakups as a junior. He had six punt or kickoff returns for touchdowns on special teams. Although his numbers were down his senior year due to only playing in six games due to a high ankle sprain and team's throwing away from his side of the field, Fulton pulled down two interceptions and was once again named All-State and helped Manning to a 10-4 record. Commit Date: 1/2/10 Recruiting Competition: Florida, LSU, South Carolina Why Alabama: "Alabama is a home away from home for me. I have a great relationship with the coaching staff. I just loved everything about Alabama. They live football at Alabama. I wanted to be a part of it everyday. I made friends with Mark Ingram and Julio Jones. Mark told me if he could come all the way down from Michigan to play at Alabama then I could come from South Carolina. "I feel like Alabama really needed me at cornerback. The coaching staff really made me feel like I was a priority for them." Strengths/Improvements: "I am a big corner, so I like to play close to the line. I think I am more of a man guy myself. My coaches always tell me that, and I think that is what most college coaches like about me. I can make the interception in coverage or come up and make the big hit against the run. I am big enough that I can play safety or corner too. I think schools like that. I want to continue to work on my back pedal and hips." Coach Quotes (Head Coach Robbie Briggs): "John was a three year starter for us. He made All-State both his junior and senior seasons and doesn't shy away from competition. "At corner, John's an excellent cover man. He battles in man-to-man coverage. Can stay with his man on a deep ball with his quick backpedal, and he's a ball-hawk with good range." "At the combines John was clocked at a 4.34. He can cover a lot of ground in a hurry when the ball's in the air with excellent agility and closing speed. He does like to play physical. John is a very, very competitive player." Fulton grew up in what Briggs called a "structured environment." With John's father a drill Sargent, and his mother, a minister. "He was a model citizen at Manning," Briggs said of Fulton. "I don't think he was ever involved in any trouble. He's very disciplined and focused." "We talked about his decision for months. It came down to South Carolina and Alabama with John. I stepped back and gave him space as he and his family consulted on what was best for John. I think Coach Saban did a good job building a good relationship with him." Andrew Bone says: "Fulton is a very fast defensive back and very physical. He is an aggressive player and has very good recovery speed. He will definitely benefit by enrolling at Alabama in January and has an opportunity to compete right away for early playing time."
